Himanshi Sonker is a B. Com (Hons) student of Daulat Ram College, Delhi University who has been continuously involved in beyond the classroom activities.
Here, Himanshi is sharing her experience being the President of Connecting Dreams Foundation of Daulat Ram College. Her hard work has the potential to propel her ahead of the curve.

What was your role? Briefly list the responsibilities associated with it.
I am the President of Connecting Dreams Foundation, Daulat Ram College. As the President, I am responsible for all the work and activities. Some of the primary responsibilities are-:
- Supervise the running of the Society as the Head of the Committee – this will include delegating duties, overseeing others in their roles and supporting both your committee and the membership in their roles too.
- Set the direction, aims and objectives of the Society after consultation with the Committee.
- Support the Treasurer in terms of budgeting for the year.
- Act as a Financial signatory, signing off expenditure for the society with the Treasurer.
- Act as the Society representative to all external and internal agencies.
What’s it like to juggle between leadership roles and academics? Pen down the challenges you faced.
Juggling between a leadership role and normal college life was a challenging task but with the proper guidance, I learnt to manage things and It’s completely upon the person’s perspective how they take up the responsibilities.
Leadership role has an extra responsibility to stick by the norms of college in matters of controlling and organizing the events whereas normal student life is bit ease to go with the flow.
At times during events, you would want to behave normally like any other students who are watching and enjoying the events, but we are bounded to the responsibilities given to us. But I’m happy that I took up the responsibility.
As long as you graciously accept every circumstance, life becomes ten times easier. Over the course of numerous unpredictable situations, I have learnt to accept and tackle them with the best of my abilities.
Did you also get a chance to connect with any other activity while working on this post?
Just because of my participation in various activities going around in my college. I got this opportunity to be the President of Connecting Dreams Foundation.
We organise events, different speakers from different backgrounds with different experiences come and share their experiences with us and with all the other students.
What are the top learnings, skills and values that you acquired here?
These are the main skills which I developed:
- Leadership Skills
- Creativity
- Time Management
- Multiple tasking
- Problem-solving skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Adaptability and curiosity.
Do you feel your current role fills you with pride and gratitude? Illustrate how the experience gained will help you going forward?
Yes, as the part of the society we develop our skills in many ways but as President of the society you’re the backbone of the society, and it fills me with gratitude.
As when we talk about leadership we have a whole team with us. How do you persuade others to accept your ideas/ways?
You know your idea is good, you’ve done your homework, and your arguments are well researched and founded. But it’s important to convey your idea with the team as well, being able to convince someone to see things your way is a wonderful skill that will prove to be useful over and over again. So there are some points which I follow:
- Believe in your idea, and know-how to define it.
- Listen to the other person’s point of view.
- Be confident and passionate.
- Match the other person’s body language and manner of speaking.
- Do not force your idea; simply make suggestions.
What is your message to students, aspiring the same or a similar role to do?
In my opinion, the purpose of college life is to explore yourself and your surroundings as much as you can, a chance that most of us didn’t get during school. One way of exploring is to take initiative. Always keep in mind, even if you don’t get a position, keep growing and never stop working on yourself.
How can we (Friends, Family, YI Fraternity) encourage young students such as yourself to engage with co-curricular or extra-curricular activities?
We can encourage the students by telling them about the benefits of extracurricular activities. We can tell them about various skills they develop like leadership qualities, communication protocol, how to be more impressive, how to deal with the duties, how to manage time and many more.
Also, we should tell them how leadership roles help in career development.
